SECTION I: IDENTIFICATION
Product name : Polymal 8200PT(GP)/8201PT / 8201PT(GP)/8202PT(GP)/8201WPT/8203PT(GP)
Description : Unsaturated polyester resin solution
Use: Manufacture of reinforced plastic composite such as fiberglass products. For industrial use only.
SECTION II: COMPOSITION/ INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
Chemical Name CAS No. % OSHA PEL ACGIH TLV Hazard
Unsaturated polyester resin :Not available 57 – 62 none none -
Styrene monomer 100-42-5 38 – 43 100ppm 50ppm Harmful
SECTION III: POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECT
Health hazard (acute and chronic)
Ingestion : Low toxic as for oral acute toxicity
Eye contact : May cause irritation, experienced as discomfort and pain, and seen as redness and possible swelling of the eye, and possible injury to the cornea.
Skin contact : Prolonged or repeated skin contact will cause dermatitis
Inhalation : Harmful. Vapor of styrene irritates respiratory tract and has narcotic effect. High concentration of the vapor cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness,
euphoria, loss of coordination, nausea and vomiting.
SECTION IV: FIRST AID
INGESTION : Do not induce vomiting. Transfer to medical facility for gastric lavage.
EYE CONTACT : Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, with eyelids open. Seek immediate medical attention.
SKIN CONTACT : Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Wipe resin off skin. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.
INHALATION : Remove and attend to fresh air and keep at rest. If condition is severe, get medical attention.
SECTION V: FIRE FIGHTING INSTRUCTION
Flammable liquid. Avoid all ignition sources. Use only in well ventilated areas. Keep container tightly closed.
Flash point (Seta closed cup): 32 oC for styrene monomer
Flammable limits : LEL 1.1%, UEL 6.1% for styrene monomer
Fire extinguishing media : Foam, dry chemicals and CO2
Special fire fighting procedure : Full face, self-contained breathing apparatus, and protected procedure clothing are recommended.
Unusual fire and explosion hazards : The mixed gas of styrene with air explode by existence of fire explosion hazards (explosion limit : 1.1 ~ 6.1%).
SECTION VI: ACCIDENT RESPONSE
Personal precautions : Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. To ensure contamination area has good ventilation. Do not inhale mist or aerosol. Prohibit smoking and extinguish naked fire. Avoid sparks and remove ignition sources.
Personal Protection : Wear goggles, gloves, jacket and safety boots-rubber type, knee length.
Environmental Precautions : Avoid from spreading /entering into drains or rives by using sand, earth other appropriate barriers. Inform local authority if this can not be avoided.
Clean-up method : Absorb or contain liquid with sand, earth or spill control material. Shovel up and place in a labeled container for subsequent disposal. Flush contaminated area with plenty of water.
Disposal method : Incineration. Please dispose of in accordance with all Federal, State and local regulations. Keep out of public water supply
SECTION VII: SAFE HANDLING AND STORAGE
Precautions to be taken in handling and storage:
Store in the shade at temperature below 250C. Keep away from fire at handling and storing places. Local ventilation must be provided at workstations. If ventilation is not good, person must wear respiratory protection. Handle with protective gloves and safety glasses.
Storage: Styrene degrades most plastics and rubbers and corrodes copper and copper alloys. Avoid these materials for storage and handling of styrene based resin solutions. Protect storage containers against physical damage. Outside storage or detached storage is preferred.
SECTION VIII: PERSONAL PROTECTION
Respiratory protection : NIOSH approved ones.
Ventilation : Local exhaust ventilation is required.
Eye / skin protection : Safety glasses, impermeable gloves.
Work / hygienic practices : Safety showers, eyewash fountains.
SECTION IX: PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Appearance & odor : Cloudy pink liquid with odor of styrene.
Boiling point : 145ºC @ 760mm Hg for styrene monomer. May polymerize below boiling point.
Specific gravity @250C (water =1) : 1.0 ~ 1.2
Vapor pressure : 670 Pa / 20ºC for styrene monomer
Vapor density (air=1): 3.6 for styrene monomer
Evaporation rate : 12.4 (ASTM D3539, (butyl acetate =1)) for styrene monomer
Stability in water : Insoluble
Stability in organic solvents : Miscible with acetone, glycol ethers, toluene
SECTION X: STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
Product stability : Unstable. Must be stored in the shade, preferably below 250C. The product is stable under normal condition of storage and transport. It has a limited storage life due to inhibitor depletion and should be used within 3 months from manufacturing date.
Incompatibility (materials to avoid) : Strong acids, peroxides and other oxidizing agents.
Hazardous polymerization : May occur. Must avoid high temperature storing, exposure to direct sunlight and contact of oxidizing materials.
Hazardous decomposition product : CO and CO2, low molecular weight hydrocarbons and organic acids.
SECTION XI: TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Toxicity data
Oral-rat LD50 : >2,000 mg/kg (styrene monomer) Inhalation-rat LC50 : >2- 20mg/l/4hours (styrene monomer)
Carcinogenicity : Limited evidence of carcinogenic effect
Effects of over exposure - : Headache by inhalation
Primary routes of entry : Eye or skin contact, inhalation.
SECTION XII: ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Risk to environment: Marine Pollutant.
SECTION XIII: DISPOSAL CONSIDERATION
Precautions : Please refer to section VII before handling the product or container.
Material Disposal : Recover or recycle if possible. Otherwise, incineration or dispose off in accordance with all Federal, State and local regulations. Keep out of public water supply.
Container Disposal : Drain container thoroughly. Send to drum recoverer or metal reclaimer.
Local Legislation : The recommendation provided are considered appropriate for safe disposal. Local regulations may be more stringent and must be
complied with.
